DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also ruling Awami League president, on Saturday categorically said the main reason for the killing on August 15, 1971 was to destroy the spirit of liberation war.
“The anti-liberation war forces were involved in the brutal killing. They did it to establish their power unequivocally,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina made the observations while addressing a rally, organized by Dhaka city Awami League to commemorate the National Mourning Day, at Suhrawardy Udyan in the afternoon.
The premier also claimed that former President Ziaur Rahman, also founder of BNP, gave green signal for the murder.
“Self-confessed killers met Ziaur Rahman who told them that he would not accompany them but he gave green signals for the killing,” she said.
Earlier in the day, the proceedings of the rally started by reciting from Holy Scriptures of various religions around 3:30pm.
Dhaka city Awami League acting president MA Aziz presided over the rally.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Suranjit Sengupta, Advocate Sahara Khatun, Mahbubul-anif and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim also spoke.
