DHAKA: The countrywide half-day hartal called by Islami Chhatra Sena was observed peacefully across the country, begun from 6:00am Sunday.
Banglanews correspondents from across the country reported that the hartal ended at 2:00pm without any major incidents.
Leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Sena (ICS) brought out processions from the North Gate of Baitul Mokkaram Mosque at 8:30am during the hartal.
Moreover, neither any violence nor vandalism was also reported during the shutdown.
But Islami Chhatra Sena President Nurul Karim Chishti claimed that law enforcers detained hundreds of their activist for picketing.
Public transports, though a few, were seen plying on several routes of the city and personal vehicles were hardly seen across the city.
The flood-hit districts, however, remained out of the purview of the hartal.
Furthermore, law and enforcing agencies remained alert in the city to thwart any untoward incident across the city.
Additional police forces were deployed at the strategic points of the city.
Earlier, the ICS announced the hartal at a press conference in the city’s Fakirapool on Saturday protesting killing of Maulana Nurul Islam Faruqi, a leader of Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat.
Unidentified assailants brutally slaughtered Faruqi to death at his city’s residence on Wednesday night.
Besides, serving as the Imam of the Supreme Court Mosque, Faruqi was moderator two Islamic programs at a private satellite television channel and owned a Hajj travel agency, Faruqi Tours and Travels Private Limited.
Three people, including a woman, were arrested so far in the killing connection.
