Stray violence mark Jamaat hartal

DHAKA: Countrywide hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami Supreme Court verdict that sentenced Delawar Hossain Sayedee to imprisonment unto death for war crimes, underway Thursday amid violence.

GAZIPUR:  Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir set fire at pile of cotton on rail track and blasted cocktails in front of Sadar thana gate in the district.

COMILLA: Hartal supporters set fire to a cotton-laden truck in Debidar upazila of the district hours before the nationwide hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami.

Sylhet: Leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its students’ wings Islami Chattra Shibir brought out brisk processions in Sylhet, vandalized vehicles here on Thursday morning moments after a 24-hour hartal commenced.

Narayanganj: Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, vandalized at least 10 vehicles in Narayanganj on Thursday morning during 24-hour hartal.

They, however, were also seen locked into clashes with police at that time after which the law enforcers detained one of them.

Satkhira: Police detained some 18 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its students’ wing Islami Chhattra Shibir from different places of the district early Thursday.

On Wednesday, Supreme Court sentenced Sayedee to imprisonment unto death, on 2 charges of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, differing with the International Crimes Tribunal’s death penalty to him.
