DHAKA: BNP-led 20-party alliance has called countrywide daylong hartal for Monday protesting restoring parliament authority to impeach judges.
The declaration came from a meeting of the high ups of the alliance on Saturday evening.
After the meeting, spokesperson for the alliance Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, also BNP acting secretary general, was talking to journalists at a press briefing at chairperson’s Gulshan office.
Mirza Fakhrul told the newsmen that the shutdown will begin at 6:00am on Monday, right after Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami 24-hour hartal, which is set to start at 6:00am on Sunday and end at 6:00am on Monday.
This is the first hartal of the BNP-led alliance after the January 5 general elections.
On Wednesday, the parliament passed the much-talked-about ‘Constitution (16th Amendment) Bill, 2014’ without any opposition, paving the path for establishing its power to remove Supreme Court judges.
