A combination of smart cricket, good strategy and luck led Bangladesh achieving a great test win at Sabina Park, Kingston. Bangladesh drew the two matches test series 1-1 after losing the first test at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua. For a team not having some key players Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Nzmul Hasan Shanto for different reasons the win is a great achievement.
Bangladesh was in a cycle of losing tests and suffering series whitewash after winning against Pakistan in Pakistan. This win will work as a moral booster. For a new Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraj and new team management it will work as a tonic for greater glory. Sabina Park wicket traditionally helps good bowling attack and fortunately Bangladesh had a great bowling unit. Surprisingly the young batting unit also performed to back up the bowling.
Bangladesh winning the toss and batting fast on a pacey wicket under cloud cover was a barve decision. Rain interrupted play on the first two days. Bangladesh aided by some missed chances by the West Indian fielders managed scoring 164 in the first innings. Jayden Seales bowled 15.5 overs (75 balls), conceded only 5 runs and took 4 wickets. Another test defeat and series whitewash were looming when West Indies crawled to 70/1 at stumps on day two.
Nahid Rana the rookie speedster from Bangladesh changed the complexion of the tests bowling fast consistently at and around 150 kph. His 5/61 caused West Indies to get bundled out for 146. Hasan Mahmood taking 2/19 gave him great assistance.
Bangladesh batted smartly in the 2nd innings counter attacking in ODI mode. On a wicket of uneven bounce and turning it was a great decision. Mehidy Miraj (42), Shadman Islam (46), Shahadat (28), Litton Das ( 25) all made useful contributions. But Zaker Ali batting aggressively for his 91 put the icing on the cake assisting Bangladesh scoring 268 all out and an imposing target of 287 for the West Indians. At Sabina Park the highest score for a team winning in chasing was 211. On a turning wicket of uneven bounce experienced Taijul Islam taking 5/50 crashed the home team to 185 all out. Hasan Mahmood (2/19) and Taskin Ahmed (2/45) were other tormentors. It was indeed a great win for Bangladesh after suffering so many test defeats over the past few months.
