DHAKA: Japan expressed interest to invest in two economic zones following the Bangladesh government’s plan to create 100 economic zones across the country within 15 years.
The country is working with Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) and Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in this regard and they have already completed feasibility study in two areas.
Japan ambassador to Bangladesh Masato Watanabe came up with this assertion in a signing ceremony at NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in city on Sunday (May 22).
Economic Relation Division (ERD) secretary Mohammad Mejbahuddin signed two pacts on behalf of Bangladesh while Masato Watanabe signed 'Exchange of Notes' agreement and JICA Bangladesh chief representative Mikio Hataeda signed 'Grant Agreement'.
The participants said about one crore people would be employed in 100 economic zones and expected to earn 4,000-crore USD per year.
Among the 100 zones, the government has approved 59 including four in private sector and five for foreign investors.
Mikio Hataeda said Japan will always be with Bangladesh for the development in its socio-economic sector.
