No Major Shift Expected in U.S. Policy, says Touhid

Foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain expressed confidence today (Nov 7) that there would be no major change in U.S. policy towards Bangladesh under Donald Trump's administration compared to Biden’s government.

“There’s no need to speculate. We’ll wait and engage as needed,” he told reporters at the foreign ministry this afternoon.

Touhid made these comments in response to a question about Donald Trump's win in the U.S. presidential election and its possible impact on Bangladesh-U.S. relations.

He emphasized that Bangladesh-U.S. relations are not solely influenced by which political party holds power in Washington.

“The issues we discussed with the Biden administration largely continued from the previous Trump administration,” he noted, suggesting that relations are likely to remain stable.

“He (Trump) hasn’t indicated any significant changes—positive or negative—in relations with Bangladesh. Has he suggested that Washington’s ties with Dhaka would be downgraded?” Touhid questioned.

The adviser’s remarks came shortly after his return from Kuwait City, where he attended a UN conference on counter-terrorism.

At the conference, Touhid reaffirmed Bangladesh’s strong commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on terrorism in all forms.
