Former MP SA Khaleque passes away

Former Member of Parliament (MP) and vice president of the Dhaka city unit of the BNP SA Khaleque passed away this afternoon (Jan 5) at United Hospital in Dhaka.

Khaleque, who also served as a deputy mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation, died at around 3:30 pm, according to BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

He had been battling various age-related health complications for a long time.

Admitted to United Hospital last Wednesday after his condition worsened, Khaleque was placed on a ventilator on Saturday night as his health became critical.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited him at the hospital on Sunday noon, just hours before his passing.

SA Khaleque began his political journey with the BNP under its founder, Ziaur Rahman, and was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the 1979 elections from the Dhaka-14 constituency.

In subsequent years, he contested under the Jatiya Party banner, winning the Dhaka-11 seat in both the 1986 and 1988 elections.

Khaleque rejoined the BNP before the 1996 national elections and reclaimed the Dhaka-11 seat as a BNP candidate. He served his final term in Parliament after being re-elected from the same constituency in 2001.
