Dhaka has yet to receive a response from Delhi regarding its request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been residing in the neighboring country since her removal from office following a student-led mass uprising.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Rafiqul Alam confirmed the matter during a press briefing at the ministry’s office in Dhaka on Tuesday (Dec 24).
Responding to a query about the lack of a response from India, the he said that if the letter is not addressed within a "normal time," a follow-up letter will be issued.
Regarding the "normal time", he also said: “It depends on the nature of the issue, the spokesperson explained. This is a highly sensitive matter, and there is no fixed timeline. In some cases, these matters can take years to resolve.”
When asked about the current status of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and whether the Indian government had provided any updates on her, the spokesperson said, “We have received media questions on this over the past few days. The Foreign Advisor and Foreign Secretary have already addressed this matter. I cannot comment further or provide specific details.”
On Monday, the foreign ministry formally sent a diplomatic note to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, seeking the extradition of the ousted prime minister.
