Christmas Day today

The Christian community in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the world is celebrating Christmas today (December 25), commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.

In Bangladesh, Christians from various denominations are observing the festival with religious fervour and joy, engaging in special prayers, illuminating churches, and setting up Christmas trees in homes and places of worship.

Traditionally, individuals dressed as Santa Claus distribute gifts among children, adding to the festive spirit.

The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh, allowing people from all communities to partake in the celebrations.

In separate messages, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus greeted members of the Christian community on Christmas Eve.

President Shahabuddin, in his message, said Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony and here people of all faiths practice their religions and rituals independently, urging all to work together for a happy, prosperous, and non-communal Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, in his message, hoped that Christmas would further strengthen the existing camaraderie and harmony between Christians and other communities in the country.

"For thousands of years, people of all religions, regardless of race, religion, or caste, have lived together in harmony in this country. People of all religions and communities have the freedom to practice their religion here."

CA Muhammad Yunus extended greetings to representatives of the Christian community at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Tuesday, acknowledging the significance of the occasion.

In the capital, churches have been adorned with lights, and Christmas trees have been set up. The Christian community is lighting candles in homes and churches to mark the event. Children are particularly excited, singing carols in praise of Jesus Christ and exchanging gifts, making it a special day for them.

National newspapers are publishing special articles highlighting the importance of Christmas, while Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and private radio and TV channels are airing special programs to mark the festival.

As part of the celebrations, various cultural programs, including songs and dances, are being organized in churches and community centers across the country. These events showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Christian community in Bangladesh.
