The government has officially recognized Kazi Nazrul Islam as the National Poet of Bangladesh, effective from his arrival in the country on May 24, 1972.
This announcement came through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, following a proposal approved in the Advisory Council’s meeting on December 5.
Md Latiful Islam Shibli, Executive Director of the Kabi Nazrul Institute, expressed gratitude, calling the decision a historic moment for the nation.
He noted that the recognition had been a long-standing demand from socio-cultural organizations and Nazrul's admirers, who had long advocated for the honor through various platforms.
Poet Nazrul, who arrived in Dhaka from Kolkata with his family in 1972 at the government’s invitation, was granted Bangladeshi citizenship in 1976 and awarded the Ekushey Padak in the same year.
