India silent on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition

India has refrained from commenting further on Bangladesh's recent request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5 following a mass uprising.

At a press briefing on Friday, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "Beyond acknowledging the receipt of Bangladesh's message, we have nothing more to share at this moment."

The extradition request stems from allegations of crimes against humanity during her tenure, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and events such as the Pilkhana massacre and the crackdown at Motijheel's Shapla Square. Cases against Sheikh Hasina, members of her cabinet, and key officials are ongoing in Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal.

Regarding Bangladesh's plans to purchase tanks from Turkey, Jaiswal stated, "We closely monitor all security-related developments and take appropriate measures accordingly."

This follows Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishra's December visit to Dhaka, where India reiterated its support for a democratic, stable, and inclusive Bangladesh during discussions with the interim government.
