Dhaka: The High court Tuesday quashed the Barge Mounted power plant graft case against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A bench, comprising of justice Samsul Huda and justice Abu Bakkar Siddique, pronounced the verdict after a long hearing held on April 7.
Barrister Fazle Noor Tapash and Advocate Abdul Matin both ruling party lawmakers conducted the hearing on behalf of Sheikh Hasina while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan made his submissions on behalf of the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC).
The case was filed with a view to harassing Sheikh Hsina and to destroying her political image, Barrister Tapash told the court and prayed for nullifying the case.
On the other hand, Advocate Khurshid Alam claimed that no political purpose worked behind the case, so there is no question of quashed it.
The court finally quashed the case after hearing both sides.
On September 2, 2007 the ACC filed the case against Sheikh Hasina allegedly for taking Tk 3 crore as bribe for building the Barge Mounted power plant.
On October 28, in the same year, a writ petition for bail in the case was submitted to the court. Later on November 4 the court granted the bail to Sheikh Hasina.
