DHAKA: As a High Court order prohibiting police from taking free ride on private vehicles went unheeded to, the HC Tuesday issued a suo moto rule asking the Government to explain why ‘car requisition’ took place again.

An HC bench comprising justices HM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Delowar Hossain issued the rule following a report, published in a daily Tuesday, headlined ‘Requisition of 300 cars ignoring High Court order’.

Taking exception to non-compliance with its order, the HC asked the IGP, the DMP commissioner and the police officers concerned to submit a report “in detail” about the requisition spree within a week.

Earlier on May 23, the same HC bench issued a rule against the government that no car could be requisitioned ‘without any logical reason of public interest’.

The court had also asked the government to explain within two weeks as to why the car-requisition law of 1976 ‘should not be declared illegal’.
