Dhaka: The government has made it mandatory for district and upazila-level officials to join the national and international days’ functions amid allegations of their poor participation in the observance progammes.

A notification issued by Cabinet Division on May 5 says officials have to inform the Deputy Commissioner (DC) or the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) before the programme in case of illness or serious problems.

The circular carries a note of resentment over the fact that the government officials enjoyed the important days like holidays.

“In many cases, government had to shorten the programme in the absence of officials,” it said, for an instance.

In ensuring the participation of the officials the government has taken such a “harsh decision”, said the announcement.

The notification has already been sent to the District and Upazila offices, confirmed one source in the Cabinet Division.
