Dhaka: Dhaka University employees Wednesday came out with a threat of waging a tougher movement if their demand for rehabilitation in Nilkhet staff-club area is not met within 15 days.

The ultimatum from 3rd and 4th-calss employees came from a meeting of Dhaka University Staff Union held at Mall Chattar on the university premises in the morning.

For the intervening period, the union leaders announced more agitation programmes, including staging demonstrations and sit-in on May 25 in front of the administrative building and a two-hour work abstention with the demonstrators wearing black badges on May 26.

Union president Amirul Islam told Banglanews that they would continue the movement until getting a positive response from the authorities concerned.

He alleged the varsity authorities have turned a deaf ear to their demand in the last five years. “They are dillydallying with the rehabilitation process in the name of site selection,” he said

According to a source, the staff-club area had been selected to rehabilitate the 3rd and 4th-class employees. The then Vice-chancellor in a syndicate meeting also approved the scheme in 2005.

But, the university administrative committee handed over the rehabilitation scheme to the Site Selection Committee of the University to select a new place for their housing.

Treasurer of the varsity Dr Mizanur Rahman said,” We don’t have enough funds for implementing the rehabilitation scheme. Traffic system will go beyond control if they are rehabilitated in Nilkhet area.”

He also informed that the authorities are looking for a suitable site so that a market could be built with the apartments to foot the building bill.

Among others, president of the union Amirul Islam and General Secretary Monwar Hossain were present there.
