Will do it with sincerity: New IGP

DHAKA: Newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandaker said he would work hard to complete the ‘good’ tasks initiated by his predecessor Nur Mohammad.

“I must respect his responsible role...I will try my best to complete all the good deeds initiated by him,” he told banglanews24.com.bd.

When contacted on Monday night, Hasan Mahmud said he was happy with the government decision appointing him to the top position in the police department.

He requested for good wishes and cooperation from the countrymen so that he could perform his onerous duty diligently.

The new IG, who came from the elite-force RAB, said the ongoing works under the department would continue.

Outgoing IGP Nur Mohammad appreciated the government decision and wished his successor all the best.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed police chief took office on Tuesday afternoon, sources said. Nur Mohammad handed over the charge of office to the new IGP in the city’s police headquarters.

The new and outgoing IGPs were to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday.

Hasan Mahmud joined the police department in 1984 as a member of the BCS cadre of the 1982 batch. He was appointed RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) DG during the past caretaker government, in February 2007.

The government Monday promoted him to Inspector-General of Bangladesh Police in a top-level shakeup in the two law-enforcing agencies, by replacing Nur Mohammad after about four years.
