DHAKA:Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Wednesday arrested four persons, including a police officer, allegedly after the recovery of 60 pieces of Yaba tablets in city`s Elephant Road.

The arrested suspects were identified as Ruhul Amin, 35, Sub-Inspector of police, Naurin Islam, 20, a private university student, Maksudul Alam, 28, Abdul Ahad Alim, 22, and Khaled Ahsan, 22.

Sources said four friends were busy gossiping in front of Alpona Plaza parking car on Elephant Road at around 7:30am. At one stage of the ‘adda’, they started taking Yaba, a contraband tablet. Local people barred them.

Ruhul, one of the four, became angry at the common people to save his friends. “Agitation broke out when he moved towards the protestors wielding his revolver,” a RAB source said, quoting witnesses.

At the time, a patrol team of RAB-2 led by M Amirul Islam reached the spot and challenged the police officer and his cohorts. The RAB team recovered 60 tablets searching them, the sources said.

Thereafter, the RAB arrested the four, including the police officer. RAB also seized the SI`s car and a private car from the spot.

The SI reportedly offered the RAB officer a cheque for one-lakh taka trying to get way, but to no effect, said the spot account of the episode.

RAB filed a case with New Market Thana in this connection.
