COX’SBAZAR: A few hundred people laid a siege to the deputy commissioner’s office following a rumour about eviction of the residents in the coastal district on Monday morning.

The agitating people demonstrated in front of the DC office, sources said.

The residents of Ghonarpara, Mohajerpara, Baidyaghona and people from near the hilly areas gathered in front of the DC office and started demonstrations at around 11am.

They claimed that a notice was issued on behalf of the administration for evicting them.

Gias Uddin Ahmed, deputy commissioner of the district, sat in discussion meeting with the demonstrators and he cleared the matter as a mere rumour.

Sarwar Kamal, Cox’sbazar municipal mayor and Advocate AKM Ahmad Hossain, acting president of the district Awami League, among others, attended the meeting.

“The people who are living here grabbing the hills illegally would be evicted,” he said.

DC office is preparing the list and then they would be evicted as per the list, he added.
