Flood situation deteriorates in Jamalpur, 150 villages flooded in Madaripur

DHAKA: The flood situation in Jamalpur deteriorated Monday as the waters of Jamuna River kept swelling and some 150 villages were flooded as a dam collapsed in Madaripur.

Jamalpur: The flood situation in the district deteriorated in the last 24 hours as the Jamuna water level rose further.

The mighty river was flowing 27 cm above danger level at Bahadurabad point on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, vast areas of the district have gone under water, leaving more than a hundred thousand people virtually marooned.



The late flooding affected the villages of Noarpara, Chinaduli, Kulkandi, Pathorshi of Islampur upazila. Besides, the floods affected vast areas of Dewanganj and Melandah upazilas.
People of the areas took shelter on high roads and schools.

The flood-control dam of Guthail in Isalmpur came under threat of being burst by the swirling floodwater.

Siraj uddin Ahmed, deputy commissioner of the district, told banglanews, “We are preparing a list of the affected people of the areas and they would be given relief on behalf of the administration.”

Madaripur: Some 150 villages were flooded as waters of the Arial Khan River burst the flood-control dam long Madaripur-Charmugria-Sreenadi road.

The river was flowing 3cm above the danger level on Monday morning.

M Abdul Hye Matubbar, Chairman of Shirkhara Union Parishad, told banglanews that the dam was damaged at dawn. As a result, some 150 villages of Shirkhara, Eshibpur, Badarpasha, Bahadurpur, Payerpur, Bajitpur unions got flooded and thousands of people of the areas remained marooned.

Akhil Kumar Biswas, executive engineer of the water development board, and Ashraful Islam, executive engineer of LGED, said they were trying to save the dam dumping sacks of sand. They have informed the high authorities concerned about the exigencies.
