Kushtia: A local commander of Gonobahini, Saydul Islam alias Sayed, 35, was killed in a gunfight on Friday night with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel in Mirpur upazila of the crime-prone southwestern district, official sources said.
Two LG guns, seven bullets and one knife were recovered from the spot after the late-night shootout, RAB-12 unity said about the outcome of the operation.
The crime-busters said on information that “cadres” of the outlawed Ganobahini were in a clandestine meeting in Abdur Rashid brickfield at Aati village, the elite force raided the area.
“The terrorists suddenly opened fire on Rab personnel. In response, they fired back. At one stage of the gunfight that ensued, Sayed got in the line of fire and was killed on the spot.,” says the Rab version of the encounter.
According to Mirpur thana sources, Sayed was wanted in 4 cases, two related to murders.
