Accident galore: 15 killed in road mishaps

DHAKA: At least 15 people were killed, including three police personnel, and 43 injured in a road accident galore even on the weekend holiday Friday.

Reports from banglanews correspondents in districts said four were killed in Tangail, three in Mymensingh, two in Kurigram and one each in Jessore, Chittagong, Barisal, Sunamganj, Joypurhat and Khulna.

In Tangail, a truck tumbled into a ditch as its driver lost his control over steering at Dhala Tengor in Kalihati upazila, killing three on the spot and injuring one.The injured later died at Tangail General Hospital.

In Mymensingh, a head-on collision between two buses at Bharadoba Nisinda under Bhaluka upazila of the district left three people dead and 20 others injured at noon.

Bhaluka Model thana Officer-in-charge Narendranath Sarkar told banglanews that the head-on collision occurred at Nisinda under Bhaluka upazila, leaving 23 people injured.  

Ibrahim, 12, Reaz Uddin, 40, and Mukul, 40, died after all the injured were admitted into Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Kurigram correspondent of banglanews adds: Two police constables were killed on their way to Rangpur riding motorcycle when a Dhaka-bound bus rammed the bike in Sadar upazila gate area at 11:30am.  

Abdul Baten, 35, died on the spot and Jahangir, 37, died on way to Kurigram sadar hospital.

In Jessore, a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a bus at Monirampur bazar in the morning left one police constable dead.

The diseased was identified as Mostafizur Rahman, son of Ridoy Ali, of Pachuria village under Lohagora upazila in Norail.

In Chittagong, a youth was killed when a bus hit him at Chandgaon in the port city while crossing the road at CNB intersection at around 7 am. The deceased was identified as Abu Sayed, 20, son of late Munshi Mian of Kala Mian Soadagor Bari.

A passenger bus fell into a ditch as its driver lost his control over steering in Gauronadi upazila on the Dhaka-Barisal highway at around 12:30am, killing one and injuring eight. The deceased was identified as Siddiqur Rahman, hailed from Bhandaria upazila in Pirozpur.

An Unnatural Death (UD) case was filed with Gauronadi thana in this connection.

In Sunamganj, Abdul Wahid, 55, Imam of a mosque, was killed as a recklessly driven bus rammed him on Sunamgonj-Sylhet road in the morning. “Following the accident, agitated locals blocked the road for an hour,” says a spot report.

Another person was killed and five were injured when a sand-laden truck collided with a three-wheeler tempo at Gushan crossing in Joypurhat on Friday evening.

“The dead could not be identified instantly,” police said.

In Khulna, one person was killed and 10 others were injured when a passenger bus turned turtle on Khulna-Satkhira highway in Angardaha area of Dumuria at 6pm.

The diseased was identified as Ashraf Hossain, 55, resident of Paikgachha upazilla.

Witnesses and police said the bus driver lost his control over the steering while trying to overtake another passenger bus, resulting in the accident.
