Suspected outlaw leader killed in Jhenidah ÔÇÿshootoutÔÇÖ

JHENIDAH: A suspected outlawed party leader was killed in a ‘shootout’ between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion personnel at Chotkabaria village in Harinakundu upazila early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Mozammel Haque alias Mozam Sardar, 34, regional commander of Biplobi Communist Party.

Son of Babar Ali Sardar at Paltadanga village in Harinakundu upazila, Mozammel was wanted in a number of cases including of three murder cases, RAB sources said.  

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of RAB and Harinakundu thana police raided GK canal area at Chotkabaria village where Mozammmel and his associates were holding a clandestine meeting at about 2.30 am, said RAB-6 commander Squadron Leader Alvi Ferdous Khan.

As the joint team reached the scene, the outlaws opened fire on them, forcing the law-enforcers to fire back that triggered a gun- battle, he added.
“Mozammel was caught in the crossfire and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to Harinakundu Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead,” said an eyewitness account of the shootout.
RAB sources said SI Alamgir Hossain and Constable Abdur Rouf were also injured during the armed encounter.

Police also seized two shutter guns and seven bullets from the spot.
A case was filed with Harinakundu thana.
