CU ditches decision on tuition-fee hike

CHITTAGONG: Chittagong University authorities postponed their previous decision to increase tuition fees, amid strong student protests that continued even after a long closure of the varsity.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the Deans Committee Saturday with acting VC and Pro-VC Dr. Md. Alauddin in the chair.

At the meeting a committee headed by Dean Committee President Prof Jyotiprakash Dutta was formed to review the raise in tuition fees.

Deans of six faculties, Proctor Prof Jasimuddin Chowdhury and student adviser Touhid Hossain Chowdhury are on the committee.

Prof Jasimuddin Chowdhury told banglanews, “Decision on tuition-fee hike will be taken after reviewing the matter with all concerned. We request the students to return to their classes, shunning the path of movement.”

Tobarak Hossain, a leader of the student movement, said, “Postponement of the decision is not a solution of the issue. It’ll only kill time.”

The students again staged demonstrations on the campus and gave an ultimatum to realize their six-point demand Saturday, the first day of reopening of the university after 45 days of closure.

Meanwhile, students’ presence was thin on the campus.

Additional police have been deployed on the campus to guard against trouble.

Chittagong University was declared closed on August 2 amid raging campus violence that left over 100 injured.
