EC bent on canceling MK AlamgirÔÇÖs parliament membership Wednesday

DHAKA: Ruling-party lawmaker Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir is finally going to lose his parliament membership as the Election Commission is bent on formally declaring Chandpur-1 seat vacant as per Supreme Court order.

“The EC will announce its decision Wednesday on the basis of the Supreme Court verdict,” said Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain Tuesday at a press briefing at the EC office.

On July 15, the Supreme Court endorsed the cancellation of Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir’s nomination for election and thereby left his parliament membership virtually void.

Sohul Hossain said, “The seat of Alamgir will have to be declared vacant and fresh election to be held within 90 days for the constituency after the decision.”

“Speaker Abdul Hamid will be informed on behalf of the Election Commission after declaring the seat vacant,” he told the journalists.

On 15 December in 2008, a High Court bench constituted of Justice Md Imman Ali and Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam summarily rejected Mohiuddin’s writ petition challenging the Election Commission’s decision having cancelled his nomination for the December 29 general election.

However, on December 18, 2008, the Appellate Division’s vacation chamber judge, Justice Joynul Abedin, stayed the High Court’s order and asked the Election Commission to accept Mohiuddin’s candidature.

The full court of the appellate division later upheld the High Court’s verdict on July 15 this year.

The Special Judge’s Court in Dhaka on July 26, 2007 had sentenced Alamgir to 13 years in jail under emergency law. But, on July 4 this year, the High Court exonerated the former minister from the corruption charge brought during a massive anti-graft drive following the military-backed 1/11 changeover.
