DCC, municipal polls in December, UP next year: CEC

DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner Dr. ATM Shamsul Huda Wednesday disclosed the poll timings for Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), municipalties and countrywide union parishads, starting off in December.

While talking to journalists at his office, the CEC said DCC and municipal polls will be arranged in Decenber, but it will not be posible to arrange Union Parishad elections in the current year.

”We are collecting the information for arranging DCC polls,” said Dr. Huda.
 
The poll schedule would be fixed on the basis of Junior School Examination of Class eight, Eid-ul-Uzha and homecoming of Hajj pilgrims.

The CEC said, ”Polls for all expired bodies of municipalties will also be held in December. But the union parishad polls would be arranged next year.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Local Government Minister Syed Ashraful Islam told parliament that municipalty and Union Parishad polls would be arranged in December. DCC polls would be arranged soon.

The DCC body has remained date-expired since May 14, 2007. Elections for some 4500 Union Parishads of the country also have been overdue. And no UP polls have been arranged after March 2003.
