Dhaka: The High Court Sunday granted former Awami League lawmaker Mockbul Hossain bail hours after a special court sent him to jail in a corruption case.
An HC bench of justice Shamsul Huda and Justice Abu Bakar Siddique issued the bail order.
Mockbul was earlier convicted in the corruption case and sentenced to 13 years in jail, amid a crackdown on high-profile graft suspects after the 1/11 changeover in the country’s political scenario.
Judge Mojammel Hossain of Special Judge Court-3 sent Mockbul to jail on Sunday afternoon after the AL leader along with his lawyer appeared before the court and sought bail.
Earlier, he had been sentenced to jail for ten years in the case.
Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission Akhter Hossain filed the case as plaintiff with Mohammadpur police station on May 26, 2007.
Judge Kamruzzaman of the Special Judge Court sentenced the accused to ten years imprisonment and fined to pay Tk 10 lakh or serve three years more in jail in default.
In the case it was stated that he acquired wealth worth over Tk 5.33 crore “beyond known sources of income and hid information” about assets worth over Tk 2.84 crore.
