DHAKA: The government Tuesday decided to stop the leasing of Sadarghat Launch Terminal from June 30 to end harassment of and upgrade service to the passengers.
And the measure comes as boon for the labourers, who will no longer have to work to the benefit of the powerful lessees.
“The activities of the terminal will be maintained by the labourers under ‘work and earn policy’ from July 1,” said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan.
The decision came from a view-exchange meeting with the representatives of different labour organizations working at the terminal at BIWTA Bhaban with the Shipping Minister in the chair.
Shahjahan Khan said the initiative would enhance the quality of service to the passengers and reduce the harassment.
He also sought cordial cooperation from the trade-union outfits based at the terminal in making the new system a success.
The meeting also discussed the registration of labourers and boosting the quality of service for the passengers.
Shipping Secretary Abdul Mannan Hawlader, BIWTA Chairman Abdul Malek Mia and representatives of different labour organizations working in the terminal, among others, attended the meeting.
