DHAKA: A man was killed and 40 others were injured in separate hartal violence in several districts across the country on Sunday, the first day of the 84-hour nonstop hartal (shutdown), called by BNP-led 18-party alliance.
Besides, law enforcers detained 14 people including office secretary of Narayanganj city BNP, general secretary of Munshiganj city Chhatra Dal and general secretary of Brahmanbaria district unit BNP from different parts of the country.
In Chittagong, a passenger was killed as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw turned turtle after being chased by pickets in Madunaghat area under Hathazari upazila of the district on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Mirmal Das, 45, of South Madarsha of Hathazari.
Injured
In capital, a camera person of Channel 24 was injured in a cocktail blast hurled by pickets in front of Mirpur Bangla College around 7:45am.
Besides, at least five activists of Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, sustained bullet injuries in a clash with police in city’s Badda and Mohakhali area around 7:30am.
In Feni, at least 10 people were injured when cocktails blasted in a pro-hartal procession in the district town around 11:00am
In Natore, at least nine people were injured in a clash between Awami League and BNP in Singra upazila of the district at 12 noon.
In Comilla, some 12 people were injured, 7 by bullets, in a clash between Jamaat-Shibir and police in Chouddagram upazila at around 11:30am.
Police, however, held two pickets from the spot.
In Joypurhat, a passerby was injured in a cocktail explosion by picketers in the district town around 8:30am.
Held
In Narayanganj, police detained office secretary of Narayanganj city BNP unit Akhter Hossain Khokan Shah from a hartal procession in Falpatti area of the metropolitan on Sunday morning.
In Munshiganj, police arrested city Chhatra Dal general secretary M Al-Amin form town’s bazar area while picketing during early hours of hartal.
In Brahmanbaria, police detained general secretary of district unit BNP Jahirul Haque while picketing in Kalibari area around 7:00am.
In Chandpur, police detained five BNP and two Jamaat activists from Motlab South and Sahrasti area while picketing.
In Chittagong, police held four BNP activists in port city’s cornel hat area from a procession around 9:30am.
The opposition alliance is observing the shutdown to press home their demand of non-partisan polls-time government.
