DHAKA: Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said the pro-people friendly policies helped the incumbent Awami League government to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
She came up with the observation in a conference titled ‘Achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Bangladesh: Teachable and Best Practices’ in the United Nations (UN) building, New York, arranged by Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to UN on Friday.
A press release was issued in this regard to various media houses from the Secretariat on Saturday.
Speaker said, “Still, Bangladesh has to face many challenges to achieve MDGs though the country has already achieved a significant level of success in the sector.”
Dr Sharmin also observed that Bangladesh achieved gender equality in primary and secondary level of education before the stipulated time…the government also has been working to increase women’s participation in decision making process.
She also mentioned that Bangladesh became successful to reduce the mortality rate of mothers and infants.
She added that the achievements were possible for the people-friendly approaches taken by the incumbent government.
With Dr MA Momen in the chair, the function was also attended, among others, by Gyan Chandra Acharya, High Representative for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Néstor Osorio, EU Head of Delegation to the United Nations Thomas Mayr-Harting and member of Bangladesh delegation Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP.
