One to die, 3 get life

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) upheld the death sentence of Saiful Islam Mamun for killing the 45-year-old Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali.

An HC bench comprising Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Kazi M Ejarul Haque Akond also acquitted one of the five condemned convicts and gave life term to three others in the case.

The lifers are M Al Amin, Akbar Ali Lalu alias Rony and Rafiqul Islam Khokon and the acquitted is fugitive Selim Chowdhury alias Selim Ahmed.

On December 30 last year, a lower court sentenced death penalty to the five in the case.

On March 5, 2012, Saudi diplomat Khalaf al Ali, 45, was shot dead at Ghulshan area in the capital.

Police recovered the body of Khalaf from the area between the roads no. 117 and 120 of Gulshan and took it to city’s United Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
