CHITTAGONG: Sitakunda of Dhaka-Chittagong highway turned into a battlefield again in the afternoon as Jamaat-e-Islami men clashed with police and vandalized and torched several vehicles following the recovery of a union-level leader’s body.
The leader, Aminul Islam, general secretary of Barabkunda union Jamaat unit, went missing on November 17.
His body was recovered from beside the road in Ponthichila area of the upazila around 1:30pm on Wednesday.
Jamaat men claimed that detectives picked up Aminul while a bus carrying him made a stopover at Comilla on his way back home.
The agitating Jamaat-Shibir men torched Barabkunda union chairman Chhadakat Ullah’s house.
Jamaat-Shibir activists also torched three vehicles and vandalized around five vehicles on the highway, halting the traffic movement.
Officer-in-Charge of Baro Aulia Highway Police Station Zakir Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews.
The clash has ensured around 2:30pm and till continuing when the report is filing.
The Jamaat men went on rampage immediately after the news of the body recovery spread in the area, creating panic in the locality.
Confirming the matter, Jahangir Alam, sub-inspector of Sitakunda Police Station said the law enforcers halted the transport movement on the highway to avoid further vandalism.
Meanwhile, 25 kilometres of tailback was created on the highway stretching from Kumira area to Baro Darogarhat following the clash.
