DHAKA: Police on Saturday sought a 10-day remand of BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi for interrogation in connection with arson attack on a bus that left two dead and 17 burnt on Thursday.

Inspector (investigation) MA Jalil, of Shahbagh Police Station, submitted a remand plea before a Dhaka court after the BNP leader was arrested.

Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman will hear the remand prayer in presence of Rizvi later in the day.

Sohel Rana, a sub-inspector of the police station, filed the case on Friday against top BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Rizvi, for their alleged involvement in instigating an arson attack on a bus at Shahbagh.

Detective Branch (DB) of Police s arrested Rizvi at the party Nayapaltan office during a raid early Saturday.

The law enforcers also ransacked the party office, assaulted journalists of three private television channels—Samay TV, Ekattor TV and Gazi TV—and vandalized their two cameras.

Party sources said BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed will act as the party spokesperson in absence of Rizvi.
