MEHERPUR: A leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was shot dead and 14 people, including five policemen, nine activists of Jamaat-Shibir, were injured while attacking police car at Gouripur under Mujibnagar upazila on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, 40, the president of Dariapur union under Sadar upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.
A reliable source of Jamaat said 10 activists of Jamaat and Chibir were injured, six by bullets, in a clash with police.
The bullet-hit Jamaat-Shibir men are Delwar Hossain, Hasibul Islam, Rafiul Islam, Akhtaruzzaman, Abdus Salam and Manik Hossain.
Later, Delwar succumbed to injuries at around 10:45am.
Ruhul Amin, Ameer of Sadar Thana unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked a pick-up van carrying policemen and set fire on it at around 7:30am. Hartal supporters opened fire aiming policemen, hurled bombs and chopped them randomly, leaving the five law enforcers injured.
The injured cops are OC Robiul Hoosain, SI Abdul Manna and four constables Khairul Islam, Mazharul Islam and Mirul Islam.
The injured OC and SI were undergoing treatment at hospital in a critical condition.
On the other hand, putting tree logs and setting fire Jamaat-Shibir activists blocked road at Kayemkatar intersection in Sadar Upazila.
Besides, Jamaat-Shibir men put barricade on Meherpur-Chuadanga road.
