MEHERPUR: The half-day hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami, is underway in the district on Sunday amid stray incidents of picketing.
The party is observing the strike for protesting the killing of Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain and demanding the release of detained leaders-activist during the 2nd day of Jamaat called 48-hour hartal.
Hartal supporters blocked roads in Alampur area of Sadar upazila by setting fire on tree logs and tires of the district.
Vehicles were hardly moving there even maximum shops remained closed.
Meherpur Police Super (SP) AKM Nahiduzzaman told that additional Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) officials were deployed along with police force to maximize the security level in the district.
Meherpur deputy commissioners Mahmud Hossain also admitted about the upgraded security system to avoid any violence.
District Jamaat Ameer Siddiqur Rahman said they are observing hartal peacefully.
Police source said a Shibir leader was held at around 3:00 am Sunday.
