GAIBANDHA: At least 20 people including three police men were injured in a factional clash between two groups of Chhatra league at Gabindhaganj Degree College in the upazila of the district on Thursday night.
The critically injured Salauddin, 23, Sekendar, 24, Abdul Wahab, 25, Mokles, 23, Baker Ali, 26 and Sajib, 21, were sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
Witnesses said centering an appointment in the college a dispute was going on between two groups Chhatra League supported by Gobindhaganj-4 seat member of parliament (MP) Manwar Hossain Chowdhury and Upazila parisad chairman Abul Kalam Azad.
Following the dispute, supporters of Azad group beat up three supporters of Manwar at around 1:00pm Thursday.
Later, the supporters of both group locked into clash at around 7:00pm that continued till 9:00pm, leaving 20 people injured.
Meanwhile, the vehicle movement on Rangpur-Dhaka highway remained stopped for two hours due to the clash.
Confirming the matter, Gabindhaganj police station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan told banglanews, “Police fired tear shell and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.”
The situation is now completely under control, he added.
