SYLHET: Visiting Malaysia’s Safwan scored a goal in the second half of the match providing his country an important win in the opening match of Bangabandhu Gold Cup at Sylhet District Stadium Thursday evening.

The first half was goalless though Bangladesh created several chances but to no avail, thanks to the vigilance of Malysia’s goalkeeper Farhan.

On the 50th minute of the second half, Safwan’s left-footed kick provided Malaysia lead in the match.

Bangladesh tried their heart and soul for an equaliser. Captain Mamunul’s weak shot went over the post in the 57th minute of the match.

In the 63rd minute, Malaysian goalkeeper Farhan took control of a shot by striker Emily.

Bangladesh created a few more chances of goal in the 71st, 83rd and 85th, minutes of the match but visiting country’s goalkeeper Farhan dealt with them all successfully.

Finally, Bangladesh lost the match by 1-0.

Earlier, finance minister AMA Muhith inaugurated the six-nation Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament in a colorful ceremony in the afternoon.

The opening ceremony included a brief cultural show, upholding Sylhet’s culture and heritage.

The half an hour show featured dance performances by ethnic communities and music performances by popular singers Shuvro Dev and Mila.

The other participating teams are Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bahrain and Singapore.
