DHAKA: Alex Ferguson has insisted that Wayne Rooney did ask him if he could leave Manchester United at the end of last season, despite Rooney`s claims to the contrary.
Fergie spoke in an American television interview with PBS, in which he was verbose, frank and good humoured.
He claimed that it was common knowledge Wayne Rooney had asked to leave the club, saying he had "asked away" after Manchester United won the title last season.
But he said their relationship is repaired, and that the whole debacle may have been a positive for Manchester United and for Wayne Rooney.
He said: "I think he`d shake my hand if he came in now. He has got his energy and his purpose back so maybe that was a turning point in a way."
The United legend spoke about everything from the Glazers, to David Moyes, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, and also revealed many of the secrets of his own managerial success.
Sir Alex gave his support for the Glazers reasserting his belief that they would steer the club in the right direction.
"In my time, they did nothing but support me. I have no hesitation in supporting the way they have gone about things," said the former Manchester United manager.
