LALMONIRHAT: Erosion by the River Teesta has taken a serious turn in Aditmari upazila, rendering hundreds of people homeless during last two days till Sunday.
The rain-fed river devoured hundreds of dwelling houses, over 100 acres of cultivable land and a number of fruit orchards at Mohishkhocha village during the period, local sources said.
Besides, over 500 dwelling houses, hundreds of acres of arable land, fruit gardens and some government and private establishments are under the threat of erosion, they added.
Affected people are taking shelter on the high lands, schools, colleges and their relatives’ houses far from the erosion-hit area.
Mohammad Hossain, chairman of Mohishkhocha union, told banglanews24.com.bd that erosion also took an alarming turn at Gobardhan, Balapara and the cluster village on the bank of Teesta. Over 200 houses went into the river-bed in last two days, he said.
“We have already informed the Aditmari UNO about the situation, but did not get any response from him,” the UP chairman said.
UNO Pervaz Hassan said, “I have been informed about the erosion and I also informed the Lalmonirhat Water Development Board and the district Relief and Rehabilitation Office for taking necessary measures ”
