DHAKA: A policeman along with his associate was caught in the act of allegedly robbing a businessman of a bagful of money in the capital’s Jatrabari area on Wednesday night, police said.
Jatrabari police gave their identities as constable Sohel, 30, stationed at Rajarbag Police Lines, and his sidekick Niamat Ullah, nephew of a lawmaker from the city.
“They were handed over to Motijheel thana police with the snatched amount of Tk 30 lakh in their possession,” Jatrabari OC Moniruzzaman told banganews24.com.bd.
Police informed that the muggers picked Rasel, a local businessman, up on a microbus on his way home from the capital’s business-district Motijheel. But, eventually, the microbus went out of order and stopped in front of Kajla Filing Station in Jatrabari area.
“Finally, commoners caught two of the criminals and beat them black and blue,” police said, quoting an eyewitness account of the pre-midnight holdup.
The rest of the gang fled the scene fast driving away the microbus.
Hearing screams, Jatrabari police patrols rescued the two and later handed them over to Motijheel police.
Further hunt is on to track down the rest of the muggers. A case was field in this connection, Jatrabari thana informed.
