Suspected snatcher shot dead in police firing in city

DHAKA: A suspected mugger was killed and another injured in police firing while the bandits were alleged robbing wayfarers in the city’s posh Gulshan area in the early hours of the day Thursday.

Gulshan thana duty officer SI Jahangir told banglanews24.com.bd that police patrols intercepted a gang of car-driving muggers at about 1am while they were snatching away belongings pedestrians at Road 42 in Gulshan-2 area.

“Being intercepted, the snatchers tried to flee firing gunshots. In response, police also fired back, leaving two muggers injured,” said SI Jahangir about the late-night shootout.

Bullet-wounded Mizanur Rahman, 30, and Manik, 27, were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Mizan succumbed to his injuries at about 8am.

Police also arrested two others of the gang -- Aslam and Jamal-- and recovered a firearm and four bullets from their possession.

The duty officer also said the four, who are members of a professional gang of muggers, had been involved in snatching mainly in the high-society Gulshan area.
