The government today (June 30) said 'Sundarbans honey' is being registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bangladesh.
The Department of Patents, Industrial Designs and Trademarks (DPDT), an institution under the Ministry of Industries disclosed the matter.
According to the DPDT, the information obtained after reviewing the application of the Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat in this regard has been prepared in the form of a journal and sent to BG Press.
If no third party objection or opposition is received within two months from the date of publication of the journal, the product will be registered as a geographical indication product, said DPDT.
It was known that an application was submitted on August 7 in 2017 by the Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat for registration of 'Sunderbans honey' as a GI product. DPDT requested the applicant to furnish other necessary information on the matter mentioned in the application while examining the application.
A test report of BSTI on the nutritional quality of Sundarbans honey was prepared and given to DPDT in response to DPDT's request. Also, as the other required information was not received, information was requested from the district administration of Bagerhat by taking the hearing on the matter. The requested information was later resubmitted by the applicant on June 27, 2024.
