The High Court on Tuesday observed in the full text of a ruling that the continued delays in completing the investigation report for the journalist couple Sagar-Runi’s murder case and start of trial are acts of repeated mockery of the country’s judicial system.
Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Md Bazlur Rahman made the observation in the full text of a May 13 ruling that stops keeping death row convicts in the condemned cell before appeal disposal.
Maasranga TV’s News Editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi were murdered in their rented apartment in the capital’s Pashim Raja Bazar area on 11 February 2012.
Concerned officers delayed the submission of an investigation report in the murder case for the 111th time on Sunday.
The High Court observation noted that though 12 years have passed, the investigation in the case is yet to finish, comparing the issue with the over 21-year delay in the first information report (FIR) filing for the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case.
If murder cases like Sagar-Runi’s get a political angle, the trial process could drag on for more than two decades in Bangladesh, the High Court noted in its observation.
