The government has appointed Baharul Alam as the 33rd Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali as the 36th Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday (Nov 20) confirmed the matter.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, significant reshuffles took place in the police force. Md Moinul Islam, Commandant of the Traffic and Driving School, was appointed the 32nd IGP, and Md Mainul Hasan became the 37th DMP Commissioner.

Newly appointed IGP Baharul Alam previously served as the SB chief. A two-time promotion-deprived officer, he retired in 2020. From 2009 to 2013, he worked as a Police Liaison Officer at the United Nations headquarters in the Peacekeeping Division. He also served as a Senior Police Adviser for the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Afghanistan in 2015. Earlier in his career, he held positions in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone.

Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali joined the police force in 1984 through the BCS Police Cadre. He once served as the Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division in the DMP and was the Superintendent of Police in Lakshmipur. Sajjad Ali has held roles as DIG in the Chattogram and Dhaka ranges and as DIG of Highway Police. Later, he served as Additional IGP at the police headquarters. Known for his integrity, dedication, and efficiency, Sajjad Ali is a respected figure within the force. He hails from Shailkupa, Jhenaidah.

On Monday, Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali was reinstated to his position by the interim government.

A notification issued by the Home Ministry said that as per the Administrative Tribunal-1's verdict (Case No. 33/2017) dated September 3, 2017, Sajjad Ali was reinstated retrospectively from September 3, 2016. The court also ordered that he be entitled to all due salary, allowances, and retirement benefits accordingly.
