A Chattogram court on Friday (December 6) granted remand for two accused in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.
Chattogram's Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam approved a seven-day remand for Chandon Das, 35 and a five-day remand for Ripon Das, 27, following a hearing in the afternoon.
According to CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mofiz Uddin, police had sought a 10-day remand for both suspects. After hearing, the court approved partial remand periods and sent the accused to jail.
Police arrested Chandon, the prime accused, on Wednesday night from Bhairab Upazila. On Thursday evening, Ripon was apprehended in the Anwara police station area for his involvement in the murder.
The case stems from the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif on November 26. His father, Jamal Uddin, filed a case on November 29, naming 31 individuals and several unidentified persons as suspects.
The incident occurred when followers of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh United Sanatani Jagoron Jote, clashed with law enforcement in the Chattogram court area. Brahmachari’s bail was denied in a sedition case, leading to protests and violence.
During the unrest, Saiful Islam Alif was attacked near the Rangam Community Hall area and was fatally injured. Alif, a resident of Faranga in Lohagara’s Chunati Union, was the son of Jamal Uddin. Authorities have vowed to bring all involved in the killing to justice.
