SAVAR: The central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League Monday slapped a moratorium on all activities of its Jahangirnagar University unit, after its two factions fought a campus battle earlier in the day.
In its disciplinary action, the student associate body of the ruling Awami League also suspended 13 activists over the bloody clash, according to a press release.
The clash over establishing supremacy in a dormitory left more than 50 injured, some critically.
The suspended BCL men are Quazi Maruf Sajib, Bijay Kumar Das, Debabrata Priya Johnny, Ariful Haq Arif, Khairul Basher Raju, Shuvashish Kundu Toni, Mahiuddin Ahmed Muhi, Ujjal Kumar Das, Parvez, Choyan, Shakal, Swadhin and Polash.
BCL general secretary Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton told banglanews24.com.bd that the incident was “unfortunate”.
The university syndicate sat for an urgent meeting for stocktaking of the latest campus situation.
The suspended committee was announced on May 19 this year. Internal conflict halted its activities in February last year.
Campus sources said trouble between the two rival groups in the varsity unit of the pro-government student organization erupted at around 10 am at Al-Beruni Hall, which later spread over Shaheed Salam-Barkat and AFM Kamal Uddin Halls.
Sources said the followers of BCL leader Emil swooped on their rival Sajib and his group and drove them away from Al-Beruni Hall.
“Sajib sustained serious injuries and was admitted to University’s medical where he was chopped by sharp machete and large knife for a second time by rivals,” said an eyewitness to the rioting, wishing anonymity.
Of the injured, 12 were identified: Zahid, Sajib, Jayanta, Sohel, Real, Arif, Shokal, Bijoy, Emil, Nahidul, Shimul and Ujjal.
Following the incident—latest in a series of BCL infightings at different places--extra police personnel were deployed on the campus amidst tense situation.
