COX’S BAZAR: The scheduled biennial council of the district Chhatra League could not be held on Thursday night due to a clash between two factions in the unit of the pro-Awami League student organization.
Witnesses and police said the trouble started at about 9:30pm just before the inauguration of the council at the District Cultural Center. “The two rival groups locked into a clash and chased each other, creating a chaotic situation,” says a spot account of the melee.
There were, however, no reports of injury.
Law enforcers brought the situation under control at around 00:30am.
A number of BCL leaders, wishing anonymity, told banglanews24.com.bd that the clash ensued at around 9:39pm. Later sporadic clashes and chase and counter-chase also took place.
At one stage, when police tried to take five central leaders out of the center for their safety at about 11:30pm, some unruly BCL activists who stayed outside fired blank shots, holding some 300 leaders and activists in confinement inside.
One faction held Kaisarul Haq, general secretary of the town-unit BCL, and his supporters responsible for the trouble
