DHAKA: The opposition BNP Tuesday demanded judicial investigation into the alleged attack by law enforcers on the residence of party’s standing committee member Mirza Abbas during the June 27 hartal.

BNP Secretary-General Khandaker Delwar Hossain Tuesday made the demand from a demonstration rally at the Muktangan in the city.

Swechhasebak Dal, a wing of the BNP, organized the demo demanding immediate release of its General Secretary Meer Sarafat Ali Sapu who is among the leaders arrested during the dawn-to-dusk hartal.

Terming the attack ‘most heinous one in history’, Delwar said, “Words fail me in narrating what kind of torture the family members of Mirza Abbas were meted out that day.”

Demanding judicial probe into the incident, he said it should be looked into whether any other forces were active behind the attack.

“People want to know why government should deploy thousands police when we tried to hold peaceful programme,” said Delwar.

Chaired by president of the Swechhasebak Dal Habib-un-Nabi Sohel, the rally was also attended by BNP Vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Senior Joint-Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque.
