CHITTAGONG:  In the aftermath of Sunday’s whirlwind attacks and vandalizing of vehicles, police rounded up 143 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student-wing Islami Chhatra Shibir from the port city.

The leaders and workers of the Jamaat and Shibir on Sunday afternoon brought out a procession in the city in protest against the arrest of three top leaders of the Islamic party.  They went on the rampage during the militant march, attacking and damaging nearly 100 vehicles, police and witnesses said.

Assistant police commissioner Kazi Helal Uddin told banglanews24.com.bd that the arrests were made from different areas of the city.

Cases were filed with several thanas in the city accusing over 268 Jamaat-Shibir leaders and workers for the violence and vandalism.

A Shibir activist, Abu Bakar, was arrested from Singapore-Bangkok market in the city with a firearm and 10 bullets, police said.

Police and RAB have launched a combing operation after Sunday’s scourge—the biggest showdown since the arrest of Jamaat Ameer Moulana Nizami, secretary Mojahid and Naeb-e-Ameer Sayedee, who are now on remand for interrogation by detectives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in five cases.
