DHAKA: The High Court Monday granted bail for Mahmudur Rahman, the acting editor of now defunct daily Amar Desh, in four cases.
A Division bench of the HC comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastogir Hossain and Justice AKM Jahirul Haq also asked the government to explain within two weeks as to why he should not be granted bail permanently.
The cases are- obstructing police on duty filed with Katwali and Tejgaon police stations on June 2, Uttara-conspiracy filed with Airport police station on June 7 and alleged involvement with Hizb-ut Tahrir filed with Uttara police station on April 19.
Lawyers led by Barrister Rafiqul Haq and Barrister Abdur Razzak moved for Mahmudur Rahman while Deputy Attorney General Muhammad Selim for the state.
“Rahman will be on bail until the police report is filed,” Deputy Attorney General Muhammad Selim told banglanews24.com.bd.
Earlier on June 2, police arrested him from his Karwan Bazar office following a fraud case filed by the daily`s former publisher Hasmat Ali Hasu with Tejgaon industrial area police station.
